ON GRATITUDE
"When you arise in the
morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to
think, to enjoy, to love..." - Marcus Aurelius
And I would add....to work.
According to national surveys, one of the greatest priorities beyond family is
meaningful work whether paid or unpaid. Complacency is often a component of any
long-term situation. It is easy to take for granted the sense of accomplishment,
the thrill of completion, and the knowledge that you've somehow made a
difference.
I stay in the same hotel every time I'm in New York City. Recently I made my
first trip back since Sept 11th. I had been concerned about the staff and
possible loss of jobs. To my delight, when the taxi pulled up, a familiar
bellman opened the door said welcome back and gave me a hug and a kiss on the
cheek. It was like coming home again. As he helped me with my luggage we caught
up on events in our lives. He loves his work and he's good at it. Cynics might
say he's just in it for the tips but I've known the bellmen at this hotel for a
long time. They are dedicated and obviously enjoy what they do. Tips are a
result not a cause.
One of the statements on the personal resilience assessment in The Bounce Back
Quotient is *I believe I have a purpose in life.* How strongly would you agree?
Whether you're a stay-at-home parent, climbing the corporate ladder or an
entrepreneur, it is a sense of purpose that provides direction, satisfaction,
and success. This is true for teams and organizations, too.
As we enter the holiday season be grateful for the work you do - the difference
you make or don't make is up to you.
