THRIVING IN
DIFFICULT TIMES
""...those who can most truly
be accounted brave are those who best know the meaning of what is sweet in life
and what is terrible, and then go out, undeterred, to meet what is to come."
- Pericles
Signs of normalcy are peeping through the ashes and pain. A few weeks ago my
daughter and her husband took a scheduled but modified vacation. When she called
I said, "It sounds like you're having a great time," her response was, "were
trying —
everyone here is trying."
The ongoing media reminders, the new vigilance and the fear of what might be can
be paralyzing. We must be brave and face our fears. Each of us helps create our
environment our organization - our world. It is up to us as individuals and
organizations to "meet what is to come" on our terms.
This is a time for growth not withering. Difficult times provide a test of our
ability to respond positively —
to rise to the occasion —
to reinvent, recreate and replenish.
Studies tell us that 70% of companies survive tough times, 25% fail, and 5%
actually thrive. The statistics are similar for individuals. What you believe is
the primary driver of success. It determines whether you will try, give up, or
press on and break through the barriers. Do more than survive, thrive.
Get yourself moving:
1. What three things can you do over the next week that will move you forward
—
help you improve —
get you to a higher functioning level?
2. Find at least two things you can do to help your organization be more
successful. (whatever your level —
your contribution makes a difference)
Do this every week and you'll be well on your way to thriving. Dwelling on the
terrible accomplishes nothing. Be brave —
take control —
strive to thrive.
