Networking for
Success
* Remember
that even in these high tech days, 70% of all jobs (especially the great ones)
are found through networking.
Tips for getting started
during job search
-
Make a list of everyone you know and how to get in touch with them.
-
Before you call, decide what you will ask for or say - write it down.
- Never
ask for a job. Ask for information, advice, ideas, contacts, critique of
your resume, or how to position yourself.
-
Call the high potential people first - meet with them in person when
possible.
-
Leave a copy of your resume with them.
-
Always ask, "Who else do you recommend I contact?" Get names and phone
numbers and call.
-
Always follow up with a note or letter of thanks for the person's time and
guidance. When you find that next position be sure to send another letter of
thanks. Let them know about your new organization and position, and offer to
be of help to them in any way you can in the future. Then, stay in touch.
Note: Before you
begin networking, update your resume and be sure that it clearly and concisely
states your skills and accomplishments.
Tell me about yourself - the dreaded question
Be able to within one minute or less describe yourself, your expertise, and the
broad scope of what you bring to the table for a potential employer. You need
this for both networking and job interviews.
Informational Interviewing
This form of networking is especially helpful if you are considering a change in
profession, industry, or location.
-
When setting up an appointment, be clear that you're not asking for a job
-
Ask for 25 minutes or less
-
Get feedback on your resume and ask for advice
-
Always ask, "Who else should I be talking to?"
-
Follow up with a thank you.
If you're not
working you're not networking.
(At least not enough)
