What is Resilience
Resilience, according to Webster's Dictionary, is the ability to spring back, recover strength, spirits, good humor, elasticity. It is more than surviving. Survivors are often depressed, stuck in self-pity or self blame. Companies nationwide are dealing with both 'victim" and "survivor' syndrome simultaneously. People who have survived a reorganization or merger are grateful but feel guilt because of those who didn't. And fear of the next round of layoffs can virtually freeze people in place.
Resilience goes a step beyond. The survivor may wait for a rescuer, someone to fix things for them. The resilient person creates his/her own rescue. They take control of what they can, formulate a plan, and act. Positive action begins the bounce back effect. To have survived and recovered the ability to let go of anger, be flexible, and move forward with real joy in living, is resilience.
Some people, companies, and organizations seem to bounce back and thrive no matter what happens. Others fall flat. What is this specific ability and how do you get it? Part of it is nature. We know that activity in the right or left prefrontal lobes is an indicator of a positive or negative orientation. Blaming it on genes is a great excuse, but brains can be rewired. If your thoughts tend to be negative and anxiety is a daily occurrence, begin working on it.
